Carpet Installation in Tennessee: Costs, Padding and Where It Still Wins
Carpet lost the main floor of the American house and it is not coming back. It still wins bedrooms, stairs and any room where the floor is meant to be quiet — and in a crawl space house it does something no hard surface does.
The thing carpet does that nothing else does here
A floor over a vented crawl space is a cold floor in January and a slightly clammy one in August. Carpet and a good pad put an insulating layer between your feet and that boundary. In a Tennessee house with no basement, the ground-floor bedrooms are usually the least comfortable rooms in the building, and carpet is the cheapest fix for that by a wide margin.
It is also the quietest floor available, which matters in the two-storey construction that dominates newer Middle Tennessee subdivisions, where the master is often over the living room.
Buy the pad first
This is the part most people get backwards. The pad determines how the carpet feels, how the seams hold and how long the fibers survive being crushed. A good carpet on a cheap pad wears out early and feels wrong from the first week; a mid-grade carpet on a proper pad outlasts it and feels better.
- Density matters more than thickness. An 8 lb density pad at 7/16 in is the general-purpose residential answer. Thicker and softer is not better — a pad over 1/2 in lets the backing flex too much and breaks it down.
- Stairs take a firmer pad than the rooms, so the nose of each tread holds its shape.
- Moisture-barrier pads are worth the upgrade in a household with pets, and nowhere else.
Fibre, honestly
Nylon takes a crush and recovers, which is why it stays in hallways and on stairs. Polyester is softer and cheaper and holds color well, but it mats in traffic lanes — in a bedroom that never matters, in a hall it always does. Triexta sits between the two and resists staining well. Wool is excellent and expensive and is rarely the right call in a family house.
What it costs
Installed carpet in Tennessee generally runs $2 to $8 per square foot, including the pad and labor. Removing and disposing of the old floor is usually charged separately. Stairs are priced per step rather than by area, because a staircase takes several times the labor of the same square footage on the flat.

Where carpet is the wrong choice
- Entries and anywhere the outside comes in. Tennessee red clay does not come out of a light carpet.
- Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Obvious, occasionally still proposed.
- On top of original hardwood. It happened to a great many older Nashville and Memphis houses in the 1970s, and pulling it back up is one of the best-value projects in this state.
How long should carpet last?
Eight to twelve years in a bedroom, five to eight in a hallway or on stairs. If a carpet is matting in the traffic lanes after three years, the pad or the fiber choice was wrong for the location, not the installation.
Is carpet a problem for allergies?
Less than its reputation suggests, provided it is vacuumed properly. Carpet traps particles rather than letting them recirculate; the problem is carpet that is never deep-cleaned. In a humid climate the real concern is carpet that gets wet and is not dried within a day or two.
Can carpet go over a crawl space floor that feels cold?
Yes, and it is the usual reason people choose it. Bear in mind it treats the symptom. If the floor is genuinely cold, insulation between the joists and a sealed crawl space fix the cause, and the carpet then feels better still.
